Woman Who Represented India In The First Miss Universe Looked Stunning In The Swimsuit Round But There Was A Twist That’ll Put A Smile On Your Face!

Well, Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta participated in Miss Universe competition in the early 90s, do you know the first Indian beauty who represented India in the first Miss Universe contest? well, she was 22-years-old Indrani Rahman who was the first Indian woman to participate in any international contest way back in 1952. And yes, she wore a swimsuit in 1952 for the bikini round. But, there was an amazing twist. And she looked so pretty sitting with the other participants. Didn’t she?

Indrani wore a gajra and bindi along with a swimsuit and with this she managed to grab the attention among the remaining 30 participants.

Indrani was also a brilliant classical dancer. She was an expert in Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Bharatnatyam and Odissi.

Indrani’s training in classical dances began at the age of 9. Even her mother was a renowned classical dancer.

She has also performed for Fidel Castro and Queen Elizabeth II.

Indrani was a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Taraknath Das Award.

In 1969 Indrani was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to the field of art.

When Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru visited Washington, D.C., Indrani was the first dancer selected to perform for President J.F Kennedy and Nehru.

Indrani was married at the age of 15 to a well-known Indian architect Habib Rahman. The couple had a son and a daughter.

In 1976 she settled in New York with her family and continued to popularise classical indian dances by performing all over the world with her mother.
