Scandal, $ex and poverty- the life of the prostitutes of Bombay has been the subject of our curiosity for several years now. While some of them are there with choice, others are forced into it. They live in poor conditions, most of them continue to have unprotected $ex (and are HIV positive) and suffer from drug and alcohol addiction. American photojournalist Mary Ellen Mark went on a journey in the later 1970s in Mumbai’s Kamathipura and captured the life and plight of the $ex workers and published a book ‘Falkland Road: Prostitutes of Bombay’ that was published in 1980. Here are some pictures from her work.
